Dark Fortress

Land

Colorless mana is always on tap here; the black-or-red output comes with a leash. This is a dual that produces its two real colors freely on the turn it lands, then falls dormant for anything but colorless unless you control a basic land to switch it back on. That structural condition is what pays for the fixing: it favors a manabase anchored in basics rather than one stuffed with nonbasic duals, and it declines to reward the greedy five-color piles that would treat every fixing land as free access. The design sits in the long line of duals that make you buy your color one way or another: a life payment, an enters-tapped delay, a gate reveal, a basic-type check. What sets this one apart is where the tax falls. Most conditional lands charge tempo or life; this one charges deckbuilding discipline, nudging you toward keeping your basics in the deck instead of cutting them. And even switched off, it never bricks: the colorless tap still floors it as a usable source, so the worst case is a diminished land rather than a dead draw. That safety valve separates it from the harsher conditional lands that can strand you outright when the box goes unchecked.
