Cultist of the Absolute

Legendary Enchantment — BackgroundBlack mana

The Background slot was designed as a second commander that shapes your deck around a theme, and most of them read like build-around commander-fodder: a keyword grant, a cost reduction, a small engine. This one weaponizes the mechanic against itself. The buff is enormous (three keywords stacked onto a +3/+3 body), but it applies only to commander creatures you own, and it comes bundled with an upkeep sacrifice trigger that will eat that very commander if it is the last creature standing. The design tension is deliberate: you are paying for a devastating combat threat in the currency of your own board, so the payoff wants a wide field of sacrifice fodder rather than a single fatty. The +3/+3 with flying and deathtouch turns your commander into an evasive threat; the Ward tax makes opponents pay 3 life to target it, a toll rather than a mana cost. What makes it a genuine Background rather than a random anthem is that the drawback is the point: it pushes toward aristocrats and reanimator shells where feeding a creature every upkeep is an asset, not a cost. Named for the Absolute of Baldur's Gate's central threat, the flavor of servitude-that-consumes maps cleanly onto rules text that empowers your commander while quietly demanding it be sacrificed.
