The monarch mechanic was built as a low-stakes reason to attack: hold the crown, draw an extra card, lose it the moment someone connects. The Court cycle raises those stakes by tying a scaling payoff to whether you still wear the crown at your upkeep, and this one turns that payoff into a clock. The token generation runs unconditionally, but the burn does not: every upkeep you get a fresh 3/1 Knight whether or not you hold the throne, yet the damage clause only fires while you are the monarch, and it scales with the whole board those Knights help build. That split is the design idea worth sitting with. Most monarchy cards gate card advantage behind the crown, a resource you can recover from. Here the crown gates a repeatable, board-scaling burn aimed at every opponent at once, so losing the throne does not stall your creature production; it just switches off the engine's teeth. The 3/1 body it prints each turn is deliberately fragile on defense (one toughness dies to almost anything) but pointed on offense, nudging you to keep swinging rather than turtle behind the throne. It punishes passivity from both directions: attack to keep the crown, and the crown burns the table down; stop attacking, lose the crown, and the tokens keep coming while the damage goes silent. The tension between defending a resource and pressing an assault is the entire point.
