Contest of Claws

Sorcery1 generic manaGreen mana

Green fight-style removal has always been priced against the value it leaks: you point your creature at theirs, someone dies, and the exercise ends there. What this design does is turn the overkill into a payoff. The rule that excess combat and fight damage simply evaporates gets rewritten here into a resource, and the wider the gap between your creature's power and the target's toughness, the deeper the discover digs. Point a 6-power creature at a 2-toughness target and you aren't burning four damage into the void; you're firing a discover 4, a free cast off the top of the library. That reframes the whole spell from a removal transaction into a tempo-and-value engine that scales with how lopsided your board already is. The tension the design has to manage is real: aim at a small target for a big discover and you might whiff on killing anything that matters, so the ideal victim has to be both worth removing and small enough to overkill. That pull rewards the fatties-and-fixing shape green runs anyway, where an oversized attacker exists precisely to bully cheaper creatures. Note too that the damage is strictly one-directional: your creature deals its power to theirs and takes nothing back, so the payout doesn't cost you a body the way an even fight would. It's one of the cleaner marriages of discover to green's identity: the color that builds the biggest creatures gets a spell that pays out in proportion to exactly how big they are.
