Mana rocks that ramp are common; mana rocks that refuse to become dead cards are not. The design has two lives, and the second one is the pitch: early on, this is a three-mana fixer that taps for any color your commander cares about, but once the board floods with mana and the rock turns surplus, sacrificing it draws a card instead of leaving it inert. Mind Stone and Hedron Archive reach for the same idea (ramp now, draw later), but pinning the color output to commander identity is what makes this a singleton-format native rather than a generic accelerant. The color identity clause is also the honest cost: in a five-color deck it fixes everything, while in a mono-red shell it taps for exactly one color, no better than a basic rock with a card stapled to it. That built-in release valve is why it persists in lists that long ago out-scaled three-mana ramp; a rock that can cash itself in for a card late never asks you to apologize for drawing it on turn nine.
