City of Brass
The original "any color at a cost" land, and the template every five-color fixer printed afterward has had to reckon with. The design pins mana fixing to a life total: paying for color smoothing in increments of 1 damage was Richard Garfield's way of letting a single land produce all five colors without warping the format around it. That tax has aged in interesting ways. Against the modern shockland baseline of 2 life to enter untapped, City of Brass looks expensive across a long game and cheap across a short one, which is exactly the axis storm decks and fast combo decks have always wanted. Mana Confluence is the direct descendant, trading the trigger for a payment on activation to dodge cards that punish the trigger itself; the gap between those two payment models is a small clinic in how stack-based damage interacts with replacement effects and pingers. Gemstone Mine took the cost in a different direction (a hard cap on uses rather than a recurring tax), and the cycle of filter lands and pain lands all sit downstream of the problem this card defined first. Reprinted across Chronicles, the From the Vault series, and multiple Masters sets, the design has never needed an update to stay legible, a rarity among the early-era any-color fixers it predates.
