Chord of Calling
Convoke is what turns a tutor into a payoff. Most creature tutors cost real mana and hand you a card to recast next turn; this one taps the board you already have to fetch the exact creature you need and drop it straight onto the battlefield, at instant speed. That last detail is the whole engine. The X scales with the creatures you tap to cast it, so a wide board doesn't just pay for the spell, it raises the ceiling of what you can grab. Hold it during the opponent's combat to summon a blocker before damage, flash in a threat at the end of their turn, or assemble the last piece of a combo on their upkeep. Toolbox decks live and die on this card precisely because it collapses two functions, finding the creature and putting it into play, into one instant-speed window that the opponent cannot pre-empt the way they could a sorcery-speed search. The card answers the classic problem with silver-bullet tutoring: a tutor that only finds the card is too slow, and a free tutor that drops the card into play is too strong. Convoke is the meter. You pay in board presence, and the more board you've committed, the bigger the answer you can summon, which means the spell is at its most explosive exactly when you've already done the work to deserve it. Green creature-toolbox strategies have leaned on this card for as long as those strategies have existed.
