The lifegain side is a tax you pay to unlock the kill switch. Tapping for one life a turn is almost nothing on its own; the card is built around the threshold clause, which asks you to climb ten life above your starting total before it flips into the side that actually wins games. That gap is the whole design tension: the front face produces the very resource that arms the back face, so the artifact spends several turns telegraphing exactly what it intends to do while your opponents decide whether to spend removal on a tapping rock or let it go off. Once Chalice of Death is online, it becomes a recurring drain that does not care about blockers, board states, or hexproof on creatures: a clock that fires at any target player every turn it untaps. The reward structure rewards lifegain shells without demanding them, which is why the card reads as a slow-motion combo piece dressed up as a value engine. It is a transform artifact with no creature anywhere in the picture, a flip card whose two states are not a creature and its monstrous form but a defensive posture and an offensive one. The friction is that ten-life climb: too slow to be reliable, too rewarding to ignore once the math tips your way, and a permanent invitation for the table to do something about it before the second face comes online.
