The Mercenary tutoring chain was the era's grimy mirror of the Rebel toolbox built alongside it, and this sits high on black's version: the bigger, costlier fetcher that pulls anything beneath it onto the battlefield. The design logic mirrors the Rebel engine exactly but inverts the temperament. Where Rebels searched out white utility creatures with surgical precision, the Mercenary tax climbs as you reach up the chain, and the search clause caps each activation at mana value 4 or less. This card cannot fetch its equals or betters, only fodder below it, so the engine grinds sideways instead of snowballing into one overwhelming threat. The activation cost is the real governor, pricing each tutor at a full turn's worth of mana and ensuring the chain advances slowly enough that an opponent can answer it. Fear does the quiet work of turning the assembled board into reach, since the value of stacking Mercenaries was always converting tutoring tempo into damage that a normal blocking grid cannot intercept. It is a hierarchical creature-toolbox in the truest sense: power flows downward, never up, and the cap on what each activation can find is what stops a single dork from assembling the whole curve in an afternoon.
