Casting of Bones
A draw-three engine bolted onto the cheapest sacrifice fodder you own, with a single discard the only friction the design imposes. The structural bet here is that black would rather spend a card and three mana up front to bank a refill that only pays out when a creature dies. That makes the Aura a deliberate tension between investment and timing: enchant something you control and you are choosing when the trigger fires (a chump block, a sacrifice outlet, a forced trade), so the death you are paying for becomes a death you can schedule. Enchant an opponent's creature and you are betting they kill it for you, turning their removal or combat math into your card advantage. The discard clause is the balancing valve: you see three but keep two, the same net-two-card profit black has historically priced into its draw spells, with the third card serving as a smoothing dig rather than raw advantage. It descends from the old black tradition of buying cards with bodies, the lineage that runs through Skulltap and similar death-payoff draw, and it points forward to every "when this creature dies, draw" effect that later got folded directly onto creatures rather than rented out via an Aura. The Aura framing is the dated part: spending a whole card to attach the engine, then needing a second thing to die, is two layers of fragility that modern design tends to collapse into one.
