How this card plays

7 reviews

The artifact-graveyard angle is the whole pitch, and it narrows the audience fast. The reanimation mode only matters in decks already filling the yard with artifacts worth bringing back, which in Izzet is a short list. Osgir, the Reconstructor is the obvious mono-artifact recursion commander, but Osgir is Boros, not blue. The honest blue-red home is Saheeli, the Gifted, where artifacts hit the graveyard incidentally and the burn mode covers the turns the yard is empty. An artifact-leaning Niv-Mizzet, Parun build can run it on the same logic. Bringing back a sacrificed Sol Ring as a 3/3 flier is a real two-for-one, and the damage mode keeps the card live when there is nothing to reanimate.

The card's identity rests on the claim that routing both modes through the same combat-step question justifies the six-mana rate. That logic holds at exactly one bracket. When a deck wants both halves often enough, the modality earns its keep; the trouble is that the band of decks built that way is narrow, and it sits squarely in casual territory. In an optimized Izzet list the recursion slot goes to faster, cheaper effects, and five damage is too small against the commanders those tables are killing through. This is a Bracket 2-3 artifact-matters card, the kind of pick that earns its slot in a midrange Saheeli list and nowhere tighter. It is cheap to acquire, sub-$5 most likely, which fits the casual read.

Against the in-archetype field it competes with single-mode options that each do one thing better: dedicated artifact reanimation runs cleaner targeted recursion, and dedicated burn runs cheaper removal. Brilliance Unleashed justifies the premium only at the artifact-graveyard Izzet midrange table where the modality smooths awkward draws. Outside artifact-heavy blue-red, the card does nothing, and most Commander tables are outside it.
