Artifact — Book6 generic mana

A six-mana artifact whose only function is to convert mana and life into cards, one at a time, at a rate nobody would build a deck around today. The interest is historical: this is repeatable card advantage from an era when drawing extra cards was treated as one of the most dangerous things an artifact could do, and the design hedges that fear with two separate taxes. You pay six to deploy it, then two mana and two life every time you fire the ability. The life cost is the load-bearing constraint, a self-limiting throttle that says you may draw as many cards as you can afford to bleed for, which in practice is not many before the engine threatens to kill you faster than the opponent does. Nothing stops you from activating it repeatedly in a single turn, which is exactly the point: the life total is the tightest governor, and it tightens with every draw. That same logic, spending life for cards, became one of black's signature design knobs in the years after, refined into cleaner shapes like Sign in Blood and Phyrexian Arena. As a colorless artifact, this version offered the effect to any deck willing to pay full freight, which is precisely why it was priced so high and metered so harshly. It reads now less like a playable card than like a designer's early sketch of where the draw-for-life mechanic was headed.
