Mass land destruction narrowed to a single subtype, an effect that reads as either a blank or a one-sided Armageddon depending entirely on what your opponent's lands happen to be typed. The asymmetry is the lesson. Portal sold its color hosers as flat declarations of the color pie: red beats blue, and here is the four-mana sorcery that proves it by sweeping every Island off the table. The gamble between dead-on-arrival and devastating is exactly the binary, color-against-color thinking the set wanted to drill into people picking up the game for the first time. What gives it teeth beyond the obvious is that it hits any land carrying the Island subtype, not just basics; dual lands with that type printed on them (the original duals, shocklands like Steam Vents and Hallowed Fountain, and similar) go to the graveyard right alongside the basics. That is also where it becomes a museum piece rather than a live threat: contemporary blue manabases lean on fetchlands, untyped manlands, and nonbasic sources that simply lack the subtype, so a card built to punish blue at the type level now slides off whatever blue refuses to be named. It belongs to a small family of typed-land destruction (Flashfires for Plains, Boil and Choke as narrower blue-haters) where the rate stayed low precisely because the effect could whiff entirely. The honest read is a clean illustration of how early Magic taught the color pie through punishment, frozen at a cost matched to lands that have largely stopped wearing the right name.
