Blot Out

Edicts have always paid for their reliability with concession: the opponent sacrifices, so the opponent decides, and they part with whatever they miss least. Diabolic Edict and the sacrifice effects that followed it can be waved away by giving up a leftover blocker or a summoning-sick body. Fix the choice to a single axis instead, and the calculus flips. Here the opponent must give up the permanent with the highest mana value among their creatures and planeswalkers, which is almost always the thing they most wanted to keep: the untapped bomb, the six-drop finisher, the walker the turn was built around. It answers the one board edicts reliably fumble, a lone expensive threat protected by cheap chaff. Two design wrinkles compound the precision. First, the effect exiles, so indestructibility, death triggers, and graveyard recursion never get to fire. Second, the spell targets the opponent, not the permanent, so hexproof and shroud on the threat itself do nothing to stop it. What the caster surrenders in exchange is any control over the outcome: there is no dial, no way to leave the biggest thing alive when it happens to be the one you would rather ignore, and no traction at all against a swarm where the most expensive permanent is a token. It never misses the largest thing on the board. It simply cannot promise that the largest thing is the one worth spending removal on.
