Blacksmith's Skill

InstantWhite mana

Protective instants in white almost always pick a lane: either they blank a targeted removal spell (hexproof) or they save a creature from a board wipe (indestructible), and the color's history is littered with cards that give you one or the other for a mana. Stapling both onto a single one-mana instant is the design move here, and the target line quietly widens the scope: this protects any permanent, not just a creature, so it can shield an enchantment, an artifact engine, or a planeswalker from destruction just as easily as a blocker. The +2/+2 rider is the tell about what the card was really built for: it applies only to an artifact creature, tying the combat upside to a specific board rather than granting it universally. That makes the card a two-piece: a broadly useful protection spell that becomes a genuine combat trick and blowout enabler in a deck full of metal bodies. The hexproof clause is worth reading against the stack, since it answers a spell already targeting your permanent by removing the legal target, while indestructible waits to soak lethal damage or a sweeper later in the turn. One mana buys both windows at once, which is why the rate looks generous until you remember it does nothing when you have no permanent worth protecting, and does the most in exactly one kind of deck.
