The genius is the stacking. Flying and first strike together mean it kills almost anything that blocks or attacks before taking a scratch; lifelink turns each of those swings into a ten-point life swing the moment it connects; protection from Demons and from Dragons closes the two doors most likely to trade up against it, the big black and red bombs of the era. The protection clause is the tell that this was tuned as a midrange-mirror trump rather than a generically efficient beater: it is not protection from everything, just the creature types most likely to be staring back at it across the table. The result is a card that dominates the board the turn it survives and ends the game two or three turns later, with the life cushion making the race essentially unwinnable for an aggressor. It became the benchmark that later white five-drops were written against, the line where designers stopped giving a single card this much resilience and started attaching enters-the-battlefield value or a death drawback instead.
