With X open, a single attacker becomes a variable-sized finisher, and because the bonus is all power and no toughness, it does nothing to keep a creature alive through combat, only to make its hit lethal. The targeting is what locks it to the offensive role: it can only be cast on a creature already declared as an attacker, so the question is never whether to save a blocker, only whether the swing connects for enough. That pushes the card squarely into go-wide or single-big-threat aggression. The delayed draw is the wrinkle that makes the gamble palatable. You commit at instant speed, deep in the combat step, and the refund arrives whether the swing wins the game or merely chips in for a few. For a color that historically pays for its reach in cards, a burn-adjacent pump that does not cost you the card is a quietly generous piece of design.
