Balduvian Barbarians
A true vanilla 3/2 for three exists to define the baseline, not to break it. By the time red's two-power-for-two-mana creatures had established the aggressive curve, this sat one notch above them: more body, more mana, no text. The design value is entirely in what it does not have. It is a reference point, the unadorned floor that lets developers measure what a keyword or activated ability is actually worth by pricing the version with text against this one without. The 3/2 split is the tell: three power to trade up or close a clock, two toughness so it dies to the era's cheap burn and ground-stalling blockers, which keeps it honest as an aggressive piece rather than a defensive one. The Barbarian type would later become load-bearing in tribal designs, but here it is flavor on a frame whose entire job is to be plain. Cards this bare rarely earn a paragraph; this one earns it precisely because being unremarkable is the point, the quiet ruler against which more interesting red creatures get measured.
