Avenge

Sorcery4 generic manaWhite manaWhite mana

White has spent decades caveating its board wipes to keep the color from doing black's job cleanly: Wrath of God asks for six mana flat with no upside, Fumigate hands back life but stays at five, Day of Judgment strips the regeneration clause. This design attacks the price from a different direction, tying its discount to the same thing the effect punishes. If a player swung at you on their last turn, the sweeper gets cheaper, and it destroys the very board that made the reduction live. That is a defensive contract written into the mana cost: aggression against you funds your reset. The lifegain, by contrast, does not care who attacked; it pays out for every creature the spell destroys, so a wide board of blockers refunds as much as a wide board of attackers. The card asks nothing in deckbuilding and everything in reading the aggression aimed at you. Against a stalled table it sits at full price and does exactly what any six-mana wrath does. Against the player trying to race, it lands early and returns life the race was meant to strip away. The design's whole personality lives in that conditional, and the conditional lives in what your opponents choose to do, which makes it a rare white sweeper whose efficiency is a reward for being the target rather than a cost you pay yourself.
