The mana-retention line is what reframes everything below it. Most spell-count payoffs measure themselves by turns: cast enough over enough turns and the reward accrues. This collapses that horizon into a single turn by keeping the red mana that would otherwise empty out between phases, which means the third magecraft resolution refunds you four red at the exact moment a normal deck would be tapped out and waiting for the next untap. The ability is a staircase, not a threshold: the first cast filters, the second turns into a two-point sweep aimed only at your opponent and their board, and the third pours the mana back so the chain can keep going. The discard-then-draw on every trigger is the underrated part, feeding a graveyard and smoothing draws while it counts, so the engine does not stall for lack of gas the way a raw storm count would. What balances it is that the body does none of the heavy lifting: a 4/4 for four survives Lightning Bolt and most three-damage sweepers, but it is no clock on its own, and the payoff demands you spend the turn casting rather than protecting it. This is red's answer to the ritual-into-payoff loop that other colors buy with dedicated mana engines, compressed onto one legendary creature that punishes the board and pays for its own continuation.
