Arcane Laboratory

Enchantment2 generic manaBlue mana

A symmetry tax in its most undiluted form: nobody at the table casts more than one spell per turn, and the player who built around that ceiling is the one who profits from it. The restriction is older than the deckbuilding instincts it rewards. Crawl the game down to one spell per turn and the asymmetry comes from everything that doesn't go on the stack as a spell: activated abilities, lands, permanents already in play, and any single spell that out-values your opponent's single spell. Combo decks dread it, since their pitch is chaining spells in a turn; control decks that win with one haymaker barely feel it. The shared design language here runs from Rule of Law through Eidolon of Rhetoric to Ethersworn Canonist, each tightening or coloring the same clause: this is the blue printing, the one indifferent to what kind of spell you're casting, concerned only with how many. The friction it creates is real but two-sided, so it has only ever been a weapon for decks that can dodge their own tax; you build to win the one-spell exchange before the enchantment ever resolves. Every deck at the table, yours included, has to answer the same thing: what does a turn look like when it can hold exactly one action? Beat your opponent's answer and this is a lock. Lose it and you have built the cage that holds you.
