Apocalypse Chime

Artifact2 generic mana

The closest thing Magic has ever printed to an apology in cardboard. Its destroy clause reaches only nontoken permanents whose names were originally printed in a single expansion, which makes it a self-contained wipe for the very set it shipped beside: a button that erases its own neighborhood and nothing else. This is a global effect, not a targeted one ("Destroy all..." takes the whole class at once), but the class is defined by print history rather than card type or color, so it cannot scale and is inert against anything outside its narrow window. The design logic is closed: a deliberately quarantined Wrath effect that names its own set as the scope. The quarantine is the point. Most board wipes are written to be evergreen, priced against the broad field of permanents they might ever meet; this one is written to do nothing the moment it leaves the company of its siblings, a removal spell with a built-in expiration tied not to time but to context. The "can't be regenerated" rider is the only conventionally useful line on the card, and it hangs off an effect that almost never has a single legal permanent in range to destroy. It stands as a record of an era when set-specific, hyper-conditional design was still on the table, before Wizards settled on the principle that a wipe should answer the format rather than the printing.
