Ancient Craving

Sorcery3 generic manaBlack mana

Pay life, draw cards: black's oldest bargain, written in its plainest possible form. The lineage runs through Sign in Blood and Night's Whisper, but those split the draw across two cards or two life apiece; this commits all three at once at a heavier rate. The arithmetic is the whole point. Black has always priced raw card advantage in life rather than mana, on the theory that a deck willing to spend its own resources to refill should be allowed to do so faster than blue can. Where this card sits in that family is at the simplest end: no scry, no modality, no upside beyond the three-for-three exchange and the four mana to fire it. That bluntness is exactly why it persisted in the Portal-era sets aimed at newer players, where a sorcery that does one clean thing is easier to teach than the tighter, two-mana refills that came later and quietly made the rate obsolete. It survives now as a reference point: the unoptimized version of an effect black has spent twenty-five years compressing into ever-cheaper packages, a reminder that the genre started by asking you to pay full freight in both mana and blood.
