Aether Flash

A symmetric punisher that taxes the act of fielding creatures rather than answering any one of them. The damage fires whenever a creature enters, yours included, which makes the deckbuilding question more interesting than the rate suggests: you want a board built on bodies that survive the toll (anything with three or more toughness shrugs it off) while your opponent's one-toughness mana dorks and weenies die on arrival. Because the trigger keys on entering rather than casting, it cuts cleaner than a counterspell ever could: every token that pops in, every reanimated creature, every blink and recursion loop pays the 2 damage the moment it arrives, no matter how it got there. That 2 is the load-bearing number, enough to clear the curve of cheap aggressive and go-wide decks, small enough that midrange and ramp barely notice. The asymmetry by toughness is the entire skill of running it, since the enchantment never asks who controls the creature, only how much it can take. This is the same structural impulse that later produced Pyroclasm-on-a-stick effects and the white-bordered tax pieces that punish a whole strategy at its foundation rather than trading one-for-one. The symmetry has aged into a feature: in a shell that wins through noncreature threats or fat, durable bodies, a permanent that quietly executes every utility one-drop and every disposable token the opponent leans on does work no single removal spell can match.
