The end-step clause asks for a very specific board state: three or more separate Pirates dealing combat damage to the same player over the course of a turn. Nothing requires it to happen in one swing; extra combat steps, second-main shenanigans, and multiple attack phases all feed the same counter, so the trigger is looser than the "three Pirates hit one player" framing suggests, but the count still has to land on a single opponent. Clear that bar and you gain control of one of their nonland permanents at your end step, no sacrifice and no downpayment beyond the damage itself. The anthem is what makes the threshold reachable, buffing a wide crew of otherwise unimpressive bodies until pushing three of them through (whether by menace, unblockable enablers, or sheer numbers) becomes a routine ask rather than a fluke. What holds the theft in check is the reward's deliberate cap: the ability fires once and takes a single target, so overwhelming a player with six Pirates claims exactly as much as clearing the bar with three. That ceiling is the point of the design. It converts a tribe that otherwise trades in treasure and raiding aggression into a slow theft engine, where the payoff is not a bigger attack but a rival's best permanent quietly changing hands, one turn at a time, so long as you keep the crew wide enough to keep hitting the number.
