Zof Shade
The Shade template in its most literal form: a small body that converts surplus mana into combat math, unchanged in shape since the earliest sets. The two-toughness frame is the constraint that defines it. Sink three mana once and you have a 4/4, but the activation has no cap, so the threat scales precisely with how much mana you can pour in on a single turn. That makes it a creature whose power lives entirely on the battlefield rather than the stack: the pump carries no timing restriction, so it can push lethal during your attack step, ambush a blocker, or grow out of burn range on the opponent's turn. The vulnerability runs the other way: commit mana to the activation and the opponent answers with instant-speed removal, and the whole investment evaporates with the creature, having pumped nothing that survives. Against that risk, this is the swamp-payoff design at its purest: keep drawing lands, keep feeding the same creature, with a pump priced to stay linear no matter how deep the mana goes, so a flood of late-game lands that would sit idle elsewhere becomes pressure here. What separates one Shade from the next is the body and the rate on the pump, not the mechanic they share. Here the activation costs more than the lean early Shades and the body is a plain 2/2, which makes this the midrange-leaning version: less explosive on curve, steadier as a mana sink the longer the game runs.
