Zephyr Falcon

Creature — Bird1 generic manaBlue mana

Vigilance on a flier was a rare combination in the early years, and the design logic is straightforward: a flying body that does not tap to attack can patrol two boards at once, threatening evasive damage on the swing while still standing as an interceptor for whatever comes back through the air. The cost is the rate. A two-mana body this slight dies to almost anything that can target it, and its vigilance only ever buys a single chump block against the larger fliers it would want to stop; send it into a Serra Angel and it simply dies, leaving the Angel untouched. What the card is really doing is exploring a question that later sets would answer more cleanly: how cheap can you make a creature whose evasion and defense overlap on the same body? The answer, in a 1994 frame, was that you paid full price for both keywords on a chassis too fragile to make good on either. Subsequent design refined the slot considerably, and the vigilant flier eventually settled into a common-rarity baseline rather than a rare splash. Read as an artifact of that earlier calibration, it is a useful waypoint: a small, honest attempt at a creature profile the game would spend the next decade learning how to price.
