Protection from artifacts is the kind of keyword printing that only makes sense as an answer to a specific arms race, and the late-Urza's block was nothing but arms races. This was the era when artifact decks defined the power level of the format, when Masticore and Karn and an entire ecosystem of cheap colorless threats and equipment-adjacent toys set the pace. A 4/4 body for five mana was already behind the curve on raw efficiency by 1999; the protection clause is the whole pitch. It walks past artifact creature blockers, can't be targeted or equipped by artifacts, and shrugs off targeted artifact-based removal. The trouble is that protection from a single permanent type ages exactly as well as that type's prevalence, and green already had broader, cheaper answers in the form of outright destruction (Naturalize and its many ancestors do the work proactively rather than asking you to land a midrange beater first). Where Naturalize removes the problem from the board on demand, this commits a creature slot to a body that merely happens to be immune: a worse deal whenever the opponent isn't leaning on artifacts and a marginal one when they are. The result reads as a sideboard concept stapled to a maindeck card, neither sharp enough to be hate nor cheap enough to be a beater. A Treefolk built for a metagame moment, and largely forgotten once that moment passed.
