Wildfire

Sorcery4 generic manaRed manaRed mana

The symmetry is a lie the caster gets to tell. Both players lose four lands and every creature the burn can reach, but only one of them planned for it: the trick was always to land it from an artifact-mana base so the land sacrifice barely scratches you while it strands a creature deck that still needs to develop. The 4 damage to each creature is the same blade swinging twice; it clears the board the land sacrifice was already going to starve. That combination defined a school of red ramp-and-deny play built on mana rocks and threats that survive their own apocalypse, with this as the centerpiece that times the reset for the turn after you have outscaled it. Its design lineage runs straight to Burning of Xinye, a functional twin whose asymmetry leans even harder toward the caster, and later to Boom // Bust as a more surgical take on the same idea. Because the wipe resolves only on your own turn, you commit to it on a board you have already surveyed; that sorcery-speed restriction is what makes the build-around feel like piloting rather than detonating. The card asks a single question of every deck that faces it: can you afford to lose four lands and every creature the damage reaches in one breath? For two decades, decks built to answer yes have been a recognizable thing.
