Whispering Shade

Creature — Shade3 generic manaBlack mana

Shades are black's oldest mana sink: pour mana in, swing for more, and the only ceiling is the black mana left in your own pool. This one welds that pump engine onto landwalk, but the two halves draw from opposite manabases. The pump scales with the black mana you control, since every black mana held back is another +1/+1 on the swing. The evasion scales with the Swamps your opponent controls, since swampwalk only switches on when the defending player has one. That split is what makes the card narrow and sharp at once: against a deck on a black base it becomes a body no creature can stop, and the only question each turn is how much mana you held in reserve, while against a field without Swamps the second line of text is blank ink. The design is efficiency by subtraction. The 1/1 is deliberately tiny so the entire threat lives in the activations, and printing swampwalk costs nothing to balance because it lapses against half the table. It belongs to the pump-shade tradition that runs back to Frozen Shade, creatures whose printed body is a polite fiction until you start spending. What distinguishes this one is the conditional lane: the threat is not just how big it grows, but whether the opponent's lands have handed you a free path to land it.
