Whirlpool Drake

Creature — Drake3 generic manaBlue mana

Where most flyers measure their value in evasive damage, this one is built around a refill button you trigger twice: once when it lands, once when it dies. It shares its conceit with a small cycle of hand-and-library symmetry effects from the same era, all shuffling your hand back and redrawing equal cards, but the Drake is the one that pays out on both ends of its existence. The effect is deceptively narrow as written: you draw exactly as many cards as you held, so this is a hand-quality reset, not card advantage. Empty your hand first and the trigger does nothing; hold a clutch of dead lands or off-color spells and it becomes a do-over. That timing tension is the whole reason to run it. The death trigger is the more interesting half, because it turns a removal spell pointed at the Drake into a fresh hand on the way out, and it rewards builds that can chump or sacrifice it on a turn when the current hand has gone stale. A curiosity from an early period that loved this kind of symmetry, its 2/2 flying body exists mainly to carry the loop, which only repays a deck willing to engineer its own hand size around the two windows.
