The clean conversion engine of energy: it arrives with exactly enough fuel to spit out one flier immediately, then leans on a deck built to keep the counters coming. The stat line is beside the point; what the card promises is that energy will keep arriving from other sources, turning a stockpile that would otherwise sit inert into a steady stream of evasive bodies. Energy carried the liability that all storage counters share: a resource you accumulate is dead weight until something cashes it, and most payoffs of its era were one-shot bursts. This is the rare sink that scales, paying out one Thopter per three counters with no ceiling, so a deck generating energy across the curve never runs out of things to spend it on. That structure makes it a build-around rather than a role-player: it wants a critical mass of energy producers the way a token engine wants anthems, and it punishes anyone who ran it on stats alone. The Thopters matter too, since a swarm of 1/1 fliers is exactly the board that closes a stalled ground game or feeds whatever wants small artifacts to sacrifice. It remains the most convincing proof that energy could anchor a real archetype: not a flashy payoff, but the valve that made hoarding the resource worth doing.
