Whiptail Wurm

Creature — Wurm6 generic manaGreen mana

An 8/5 with no keyword, no trigger, no text at all below the type line: this is green's beater principle stripped to the studs. Portal removed instants and counterspells from the player's vocabulary and rebuilt the game around creatures big enough that casting one and swinging with it was the whole interaction. Whiptail Wurm is that idea at its most literal payoff: the reward at the top of the curve for a deck whose plan is simply to deploy threats and attack. The 8 power carries the card; the 5 toughness is the deliberate ceiling that keeps it on offense rather than letting it sit back as an unkillable wall. It dies to most of the removal a new player would ever see, which is the point: an attacker that trades, not a finisher that survives. Green's wurm tradition runs through bigger, splashier descendants that justified their cost with trample, evasion, or a death trigger, but those payoffs all came later. Here there is nothing to read after the type line, and that emptiness is the design. For one stretch of the game's history, Wizards was printing creatures with no rules text on purpose, so that the act of resolving a threat and attacking with it could stand on its own as a complete turn.
