Wandering Graybeard
Kinship was a mechanic with a structural problem: it asked you to keep your library's first card in tribal lockstep with a creature in play, and the payoff had to stay small enough that whiffing every other upkeep wasn't a disaster. The Graybeard sits at the gentle end of that spectrum. Four life on a hit, nothing on a miss, attached to a 4/4 that costs five. The two-creature-type line is doing the heavy lifting: a Giant Wizard turns on far more shared types than a single-tribe body would, so the kinship check lands more often than the rate alone suggests, and a deck stacked with Giants or Wizards can lean into it. That is the whole trade. Kinship never gained life or drew cards aggressively enough to anchor a deck on its own, which is why the mechanic reads as a reward layered onto bodies you were already running rather than a reason to run them. The Graybeard is the lifegain node of that set of payoffs: a defensive wall that nudges the race in your favor each turn the peek cooperates, with the upkeep timing meaning you commit nothing and risk nothing to look (you may look, then choose whether to reveal). It is a creature built for a tribal shell that wants to grind, doing quiet incremental work rather than asking for a build.
