Wall of Torches

Creature — Wall1 generic manaRed mana

Four power on a two-mana blocker is loud, but the toughness is where the whole design lives: at one, it dies to a single point of incidental damage, which means it stops exactly one attacker and then never blocks again. That is the deliberate inversion of how walls usually read. The genre default is a fat back end (Wall of Stone, Wall of Roots) built to absorb attack after attack; this one is a single-use roadblock that punishes the creature it stops by trading up against something far larger. Run a 4/4 into it and you lose a real threat to a fragile speed bump. The red coloring is the other half of the joke, since red almost never wants to sit behind defenders at all, so the card reframes blocking as a tempo trade rather than a wall to hide behind: it threatens to eat your best attacker once, not to grind your offense down over many turns. As a piece of early-era common design it is a tidy lesson in how power and toughness can encode entirely different roles. A 1/4 wall says "come at me." A 4/1 wall says "send something you can afford to lose."
