Walking Wall

Artifact Creature — Wall4 generic mana

An early experiment in the convertible blocker: a wall that pays mana to stop being one. The base body is a 0/6 that absorbs the early game for free, parking under attackers and soaking damage without ever swinging back. The activation rewires it into a 3/5 attacker for a turn, swapping the static defense for a one-time offensive push. The math is deliberately lopsided. Three mana buys +3/-1, which means the wall trades a chunk of its defining toughness every time it swings, and you can only do it once per turn, so it never becomes an efficient beater. That friction is the whole point: the card wants to sit back and absorb damage early, then convert its stored toughness into a clock once the board has stabilized and the mana is free. It is a defensive permanent that buys an option rather than a creature that occasionally blocks. The artifact type matters too, letting the wall slot into colorless shells that want a durable mid-cost roadblock with a closing gear buried inside it. Plenty of later cards revisited the idea of a defender that can switch off its keyword, but few are this honest about the cost: every attack chips away at the toughness that justified playing it in the first place.
