Skies decks have always split their incentives: effects like Coastal Piracy and Bident of Thassa pay evasion out in cards, while anthems and counter-makers pay it out in size. Here the two get welded into one trigger, and the wording is what makes it work. Because it reads "one or more creatures you control with flying deal combat damage" rather than firing once per creature, a wide air force still cashes out only once: connect with five flyers and each takes a counter, but you draw a single card, not five. It counts how many attackers got through, then resolves a single time. The counters are the half that compounds, turning a squadron of 1/1 and 2/2 flyers into a board that outgrows chump-blockers and swings harder every combat step it survives. And the engine has skin in its own game: it flies, so it triggers off its own connection. Once it starts attacking it grows itself and refills your hand at the same time, which makes it a threat you actively want in the red zone rather than a passive backline value piece. Its four-mana cost and lack of haste are the only real brake: it has to land, wait, and then survive to a blocking crew before its counters make it hard to kill. The design hands the flyers plan an engine that does the counting for you, rewarding what the deck already wants (connect with the air, then connect again) instead of asking it to grind for cards.
