Vulshok Gauntlets

Artifact — Equipment2 generic mana

The +4/+2 reads like a windfall until you reach the clause that pays for it: the equipped creature stops untapping during its controller's untap step. That makes this Equipment a one-swing weapon. Attach it, attack with a creature suddenly four power larger, and accept that the creature lies tapped on defense forever after unless some other effect untaps it. The design is a deliberate inversion of how Equipment usually works, where the cheap recurring stat boost is the whole appeal. Here the boost is large and permanent, and the cost is the body's ongoing usefulness, levied not as mana but as the creature's own readiness. The interesting interactions all live in dodging that downside: a creature with vigilance never needed to untap to block in the first place, an untap effect cancels the drawback outright, and a deck willing to throw the bearer away values the swing more than the soldier. It is one of Mirrodin's clearest examples of the set's design language around Equipment as commitment rather than free value, a tradeoff stated in plain terms on the card rather than buried in a keyword.
