Vraska, Golgari Queen
The plus ability is the design lynchpin, and it reads more radically than the number suggests. Golgari has always wanted to turn its own dying permanents into resources, but most sacrifice payoffs asked for a separate outlet and a separate reward. Here the payoff and the outlet collapse into a single loyalty tick: every activation optionally eats a permanent for a card and a point of life while pushing the ultimate closer. That "may" clause matters, because it lets her climb loyalty on an empty board and still function as a threat, then convert into an engine the moment there are tokens, spent enablers, or fetchlands to feed her. The minus is calibrated as removal rather than a bomb-answer: destroying any nonland permanent of mana value 3 or less catches most of the creatures, artifacts, and enchantments a fair deck deploys early, while deliberately whiffing on the largest finishers. That ceiling is what keeps her a grinder's planeswalker instead of a catch-all. The emblem is the reminder that she is, canonically, an assassin: not a value payoff but a hard kill condition that ends games through any connecting creature. Taken together the abilities describe a self-sustaining attrition plan where the same card advances toward lethal, refills the hand, and clears the early board, which is exactly the plan Golgari midrange had always been chasing without a permanent that did all three at once.
