Voldaren Ambusher
The gate is the whole balancing act. That entering damage stays dormant unless an opponent has taken life loss earlier in the turn, which pins this to an aggressive opening rather than a 2/2 dropped on curve into an empty board. The condition is broader than combat, though: a burn spell, a painland, or a fetch payment can prime it just as easily as a swing, and the damage scales off your Vampire count instead of a fixed number. Assembled behind three or four other Vampires, the trigger clears a midsize blocker or takes a real bite out of a planeswalker, work the body would never do alone. The two requirements point at the same list: the tribal count and the life-loss clause both reward attacking and draining, so this is a poor fit for anyone hoping to splash it as generic removal. It is a payoff, not an enabler, and it only pays when the surrounding cards have done the setup first.
