Void Shatter

Instant1 generic manaBlue manaBlue mana

A hard counter whose upgrade lives not on the stack but in the aftermath: instead of dropping the answered spell into its owner's graveyard, it exiles it. That distinction is the entire point of the card. A plain counter only delays a recursion deck by a turn; the exile rider severs the answered card from flashback, escape, disturb, and every other "cast it again from the bin" engine, so the threat does not come back. It costs the same double-blue that hard counters have carried since the earliest sets, and it pays for the upgrade by forgoing the small upside that comparable three-mana counters of its era tacked on (a scry, a card, a bit of life). The devoid clause is the quieter wrinkle: the card has no color despite its blue pips, a piece of the colorless-matters experiment it was bundled into. That matters only where colorlessness is being tracked as a resource or a trigger; everywhere else the devoid text sits inert, and what remains is a graveyard-hating counterspell that shuts the recursion door behind the spell it answers.
