Vito, Thorn of the Dusk Rose
Lifegain had long been the color pie's most maligned mechanic: a defensive number that padded your total without touching the board or the clock. This 1/3 Vampire rewrites that math by making every point you gain fire a one-sided drain, pushing that same number off a single opponent's total while yours climbs. The design move is the trigger's breadth. It does not care how you gain the life or how much; it fires on incidental gains, on lifelink swings, on one point from a gainland like Scoured Barrens, on a Soul Warden ping. The throwaway lifegain that clutters black and white commons becomes a two-track clock: one meter rising for you, an equal one draining an opponent to nothing. The card then offers two paths to the kill. Grind it out, letting the incidental drains stack until the opponent's total collapses; or reach for the five-mana activation, hand your whole board lifelink, and turn a single alpha strike into a doubled hit (the combat damage on their side, the mirrored drain on top). The 1/3 body is what keeps the engine honest: it dies to nearly everything and protects nothing, so the payoff hinges on keeping this fragile Cleric alive rather than on the life-loss loop itself. It is the clearest statement of the archetype black had been circling, the point where "gain some life" stopped being a hedge and became an attack.
