Visions

SorceryWhite mana

A one-mana peek from before the design vocabulary for library manipulation had settled into anything. The mechanic on offer is unusual in two ways: it targets any player, not just yourself, and it gates the shuffle behind a "you may" clause, turning information into a weapon. Against an opponent, you read the next five draws and decide whether those draws should happen; if the top is loaded, you scramble it, and if it is mediocre, you let them have it. Pointed at yourself, it is a fixing tool that costs a card to wipe away a bad top and roll the dice again, which was a reasonable trade in 1994 and is no longer one. Note what the card pointedly does not do: it offers no reorder, no bottoming, no draw. The choice is binary, look and then either keep or shuffle, which is a coarser tool than the look-choose-reorder loop that Brainstorm, Ponder, and Preordain would later refine into modern blue's cantrip vocabulary. Visions does the look half without the choose-and-reorder half, and it does it in white. The color's identity moved away from library peeking almost immediately, leaving this as a curiosity from an era when each card was still settling what its color was allowed to do. The asymmetry of targeting an opponent is the part worth remembering; the rest is a museum piece for how cantrip design has compounded over three decades.

Look at the top five cards of target player's library. You may then have that player shuffle that library.
