Visions of Brutality

The clever move here is making the punishment scale with the target's own offense. Most "can't block" Auras are blunt instruments: they pin a creature down and stop there. This one neuters the creature defensively while turning its combat damage into a steady drain on its own controller's life total. Aim it at an opponent's attacker and every swing they make, every deathtouch ping, every damage-based trigger now bleeds them, and they cannot block their way out of it. The asymmetry is the whole point: the opponent controls the enchanted creature, so the opponent pays the life. The built-in conditional is that the punishment only fires when the creature deals damage, so the worst case for the caster is enchanting a creature that simply stops attacking, in which case the Aura still does its first job and locks the body out of defense, but the bleed never starts. There is also the matter of who that damage points at: the enchanted creature can still attack you, so you are paying two mana to discourage an attacker rather than to remove a threat outright, a fiddlier register than a clean removal spell. The devoid frame is the era's signature flourish, letting the card register as colorless for the colorless-matters shells of the time even though its cost still demands black mana; the colorless identity is a typing trick rather than a discount.
