Virtus's Maneuver

Sorcery2 generic manaBlack mana

The spell resolves before anyone knows how they have been sorted: every player gets tagged friend or foe as it goes off, and because nothing here targets, opponents have to weigh a response without knowing which pile you will put them in. That uncertainty is the pressure. A foe's only agency, once tagged, is which creature to give up, never whether to give one up, while a friend pulls a body back out of their graveyard and into hand. In a duel it flattens into an ordinary sacrifice-plus-recursion trade, and it was never priced for a duel. Across a wider pod the ledger compounds: each opponent you mark foe surrenders a creature while each ally you mark friend rebuilds, and you write both columns yourself. That reach is what separates it from a mono-black stapling of edict onto graveyard recursion: a single sorcery that touches every player at once, subtracting from enemies and adding to whoever you have decided to keep close. The friend/foe framing belongs to a design era built around teamed multiplayer, where that split was a load-bearing keyword rather than a one-off flavor word, and this is one of the cleaner demonstrations of what that structure lets a single spell ask of an entire table.
