Veteran Brawlers

Creature — Human Soldier1 generic manaRed mana

Four power for two mana ran well ahead of what red was allowed in the early days, and the price is a pair of clauses that pull the body away from the way aggressive decks actually want to operate. The attack restriction reads off the defending player: the Brawlers can only swing into an opponent with no untapped land, so anyone keeping mana up for a trick or an instant on the crack-back leaves them stranded on defense. The block restriction turns inward, reading off your own untapped lands: leave mana open for your own interaction and you forfeit the ability to block. The two conditions push from opposite ends toward the same board state, one where neither player is sitting on resources. That all-in posture is exactly what this era's design kept reaching for, rewarding players who emptied their hands and committed everything to the table. The trade is honest: the statline is the carrot, the dual condition is the stick. What makes it a curio rather than a footnote is how cleanly it isolates one variable in combat math (the value of open mana on each side of the table) and prices a body against it, instead of hiding the drawback in keywords or upkeep triggers. The constraint is the whole card.
