Veiled Shade

Creature — Shade2 generic manaBlack mana

The Shade design pattern is one of the oldest mana sinks black has: a fragile body whose entire value proposition is the option to dump excess black mana into it for a swing nobody can profitably block. This one runs that pattern at its plainest. Each activation costs one generic and one black, with no ceiling beyond untapped lands, which turns a 2/2 from chump-block fodder into a real clock the moment your land count outpaces your spell count. The lineage runs straight back through Frozen Shade and the countless variants since: a creature that does almost nothing on an empty board and snaps into a threat the turn you have nothing better to spend on. What restrains it is the same thing that always has: the pumps only matter while it lives, so a single removal spell during the attack step vaporizes whatever mana you sank in, and the buff wears off at end of turn regardless. It punishes the player who taps low to enable the swing and rewards the flood that never folds. That ecology has not changed across decades of Shades; this is a competent, unremarkable entry in it, a common-rarity payoff for mono-black flooding that wants a mana outlet welded to a body.
