The growth engine and the self-destruct clause are the same card, and the tension between them is the whole design. Left to sit, it snowballs: a counter on entry, a counter every upkeep, and within a few turns you have a genuinely large body for a single black mana. But the moment it commits to combat, the timer starts. It attacks, deals its full accumulated damage, and then dies at end of combat anyway, win or lose. That makes it a one-shot weapon disguised as a creature: every turn you wait raises the ceiling on a single swing you can only take once. The card is a fascinating piece of late-1990s design precisely because it forces the question of when to cash out. Hold it too long and you are sandbagging a battery against removal that destroys the whole investment; swing too early and you waste the upkeep ramp you paid for. The more interesting line abandons the attack entirely and routes the body through a sacrifice outlet, converting the counters into damage, card draw, or recursion fuel before the destruction clause can ever fire. That reframes it: instead of a creature you grow and gamble on a single attack, it becomes a slow-charging resource you redeem on your terms. Most builds-around hand you the payoff; this one hands you the resource and the punchline both, then dares you to find the third card that makes them work together.
