Two prices, two jobs: that is the whole pitch of putting kicker on a combat trick. The floor is a one-mana pump handing a creature three extra power, the bread-and-butter trick that wins a contested block or pushes lethal through a stalled board. The ceiling stacks lifelink onto that boosted attacker, turning a tempo play into a swing in the life-total race so the creature's damage pays you back point for point. Folding both modes into a single card means you draw one spell that scales to the situation: cheap when you only need the block, life-positive when the race is what matters. The catch sits in the math of holding it open. The kicked version asks for four mana () at instant speed (the additional cost is declared as you cast, not deferred to combat), and the aggressive black decks most attracted to a +3/+0 swing would usually rather sink that mana into the board than reserve it for a reactive trick. So the lifegain mode rewards a board state that can leave four untapped while still threatening the one-mana line, a tighter window than a cheap pump normally lives in. The unkicked floor is dependable; the kicked ceiling is genuinely game-altering. The open question is whether your mana and your tempo line up the moment the lifelink mode is the one you actually need.
