The dead-card payoff is the whole design here: this is meant to be discarded, milled, or sacrificed, and then it works from the graveyard for as long as you hold a Plains. Each card in this group of keyword-granting graveyard creatures shares that shape, but this one's contribution turns combat math inside out. Team-wide first strike means your blockers eat attackers before they swing back, and your attackers clear chump blockers without a scratch; small creatures suddenly trade up across the board, and every combat resolves in your favor before the opponent's damage step ever happens. The Plains clause is the cost: the effect demands no mana and no card from hand, so it is gated behind a permanent you keep on the battlefield rather than a tempo hit. The 2/2 front side carries first strike too, which makes it a passable early body in a pinch, but that is plainly not the point. You do not want to cast it. You want to throw it away early and let the graveyard ability govern the board, and any deck that can reliably fill its own bin turns a four-mana creature it never wanted in play into a static rules change over the whole battlefield.
